EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child care facilities and schools be certified by EPA and that they use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers to follow lead-safe work practices.

According to the EPA, here are some facts about the dangers of Lead:

  • Lead exposure can harm young children and babies even before they are born.
  • Even children who seem healthy can have high levels of lead in their bodies. Lead exposure can cause lower intelligence, behavior problems and learning disabilities.
  • In adults, exposure to lead paint dust can cause high blood pressure, hypertension, and even kidney effects.
  • You can get lead in your body by breathing or swallowing lead dust, or by eating soil or paint chips containing lead.
  • You may have many options for reducing lead hazards. In most cases, lead-based paint that is in good condition is not a hazard.
  • Removing lead-based paint improperly can increase the danger to your family.
